Sharing Your Screen

You can share your screen as the host or as an attendee by clicking the “Share Screen” icon. If you are the host, you do not need to grant screen-share access for another participant to share their screen. As the host, you can prevent participants from accessing screen share. For Free/Basic accounts, the default screen-sharing setting is Only Host.

  • To share your screen, you need to have Zoom Desktop Client or the Zoom Mobile App. You can use a desktop, tablet, or mobile device.
  • Begin your screen share by clicking the “Share Screen” button located in your meeting controls (indicated by the red box in Figure 1). This will open a window that will allow you to select the screen you want to share. You can also choose to share an individual application that is already open on your computer, the desktop, a whiteboard, or an iPhone/iPad.
  • Next, you can choose to check additional features and enable “Share Computer Sound” and “Optimize for full screen video clip.” “Share Computer Sound” will share any sound played by your computer. “Optimize for full screen video clip” will share a video clip in full-screen mode. If you do not have a video clip, do not check this box, because it will cause the screen to be blurry.
  • You will need to click the “Share” button to begin your screen share. Zoom will then automatically switch to full screen to optimize the shared-screen view. You can exit full screen by clicking “Exit Full Screen” in the top-right corner or by pressing the “Esc” key. If you want to disable automatic full screen when viewing a shared screen, disable this option in your desktop client settings.

Share Screen Menu

When you start sharing your screen, the meeting controls will become a floating bar that you can drag around your screen (Figure 1). These meeting controls enable a wide variety of actions.

  • Mute/Unmute your microphone or Start/Stop Video in your meeting video. If you are the host, you can view or manage the participants by clicking on “Participants” or send out a poll using the “Polls” button. You can start a new screen share or pause your current shared screen. Annotate tools let you draw, add text, and other similar options. Under the “More” button you can choose options such as opening a chat window and choosing to invite others to join the meeting.
