Slack uses threads to organize conversations by context. From any message, you can start a thread to ask a question or give feedback without disrupting a conversation's flow. A thread will remain connected to its original message, and only those who contribute or follow the thread will be notified of new replies.
Starting or Replying to a Thread
- Desktop
- Hover over the message to reply.
- Click the start a thread icon (conversation bubble).
- Write your message.
- Click “Send.”
- iOS and Android
- Tap the message to reply.
- Tap the start a thread icon (conversation bubble), or tap the “Add a reply” field to add to an existing thread.
- Type your reply.
- Tap the paper plane icon to send your message.
Understanding Mentions and Notifications in Threads
- You will be notified automatically when there is a new reply to a thread you start or reply to, or when you are mentioned in the original message.
- When you do not engage with a thread, you can still follow it to stay in the loop.
- You can unfollow a thread at any point to stop notifications when new activity happens.
Following a Thread
- Desktop
- Hover over the thread you want to follow.
- Click the three vertical dots icon.
- Select “Follow thread” from the menu to receive notifications for all new threaded replies.
- iOS
- Tap the thread you want to follow.
- Click the three dots icon below the original message.
- Tap “Follow Thread” (conversation bubble).
- Android
- Tap the thread you want to follow.
- Click the three vertical dots icon below the original message.
- Tap “Follow Thread” (conversation bubble).
Unfollowing a Thread
- Desktop
- Hover over the thread you want to follow.
- Click the three vertical dots icon.
- Select “Unfollow thread.”
- iOS
- Tap the thread you want to follow.
- Click the three dots icon below the original message.
- Tap “Unfollow Thread” (conversation bubble).
- Android
- Tap the thread you want to follow.
- Click the three vertical dots icon below the original message.
- Tap “Unfollow Thread” (conversation bubble).
