There are many reasons why you might want to share files in Slack, such as increasing collaboration and gathering feedback. You can share recent files, images from your phone, and files from Google Drive, Dropbox, Box, or OneDrive in much the same ways as well. 


You can use message threads to keep conversations and files tied together. You can delete any file you have added, but you cannot bulk delete.


Follow the steps below to learn how to upload, share, and delete files.



Uploading Files

 You can add files up to 1GB in size.


Desktop

  1. Drag and drop up to 10 files into the Slack message field, or click the  plus icon next to the message field and choose files to add.
  2. Include a message about the file(s) if you'd like. If you're adding an image, you can also include a description.
  3. Send the message.

Mobile


  1. Open a channel or direct message (DM).
  2.  Tap the  plus icon next to the message field.
  3. To add a photo, tap a recent image or View library. To add a file, tap  Recent files or Upload file.
  4. Add a message about your file(s) if you'd like.
  5. Tap the paper plane icon to send.

Sharing a File in a Message

You can easily share a file that's been added to Slack in another channel or DM, or share it outside of Slack by creating an external link.


Desktop

  1. Hover over the file you'd like to share.
  2. Click the Share icon.
  3. Choose where to share the file and add a message, if you'd like.
  4. Click Share.

Mobile

  1. Tap the file you’d like to share.
  2. Tap the Share icon.
  3. Choose where to share the file and add a message, if you'd like.
  4. Send the message.


Browse Files

From your desktop, you can browse files added to any public channels, plus the private channels and DMs you're a part of.


  1. From your desktop, click Files at the top of your left sidebar. If you don’t see this option, click More to find it.
  2. To find a specific file, click Filter on the right side of the search bar and select an option.
Note: The file browser isn’t available on the Slack iOS or Android apps, but you can use the Search tab to find files.



Downloading Files


If you’d like to save files added to Slack to your desktop, you can download them. On your mobile device, you can only download image files.


Desktop

  1. From your desktop, find the file you’d like to download.
  2. Click the download icon.

Mobile

  1. Tap the image you'd like to save.
  2. Tap the three dots icon.
  3. Tap Save Image (iOS) or Download (Android).




Delete Files


Any member or guest can delete a file they've uploaded to Slack. Workspace Owners and Admins can delete files that have been added to public channels and any private channels or DMs they're in.



Desktop

  1. Find the file you'd like to delete.
  2. Click the  three dots icon in the top right.
  3. Select Delete file, then click Yes, delete this file to confirm.

Mobile

  1. Find the file you'd like to delete.
  2. Tap the file, then tap the  three dots icon
  3. Tap Delete.
